How to put a YouTube video into a Coassemble course, in either builder.

Yes. Copy the video's YouTube URL and paste it into a video in your course. Coassemble pulls the video in and plays it inline, so learners watch it without leaving the course or opening a new tab. There's nothing to download and re-upload.

Coassemble has two builders running side by side, and the steps differ slightly depending on which one you're in.

In the new builder

  1. On YouTube, open the video you want and copy its URL from the address bar or the Share button.
  2. In your course, add a Video block to the screen, or start the screen from a layout that already has one.
  3. In the Add video dialog, open the Paste URL tab and paste your YouTube link.

The video sits in a block, so you can size it on the screen's grid and put other blocks alongside it. Set it to landscape or portrait depending on how the footage was shot: portrait suits anything filmed on a phone, so vertical video sits in a vertical frame rather than being letterboxed into a wide one.

The same dialog also has Library (a video already in your workspace), Upload (a file from your device) and Record (a new Loom recording), so a linked YouTube video is one of four ways to fill a video block.

In the Classic builder

  1. On YouTube, open the video you want and copy its URL.
  2. Open your course, click Add screen, then choose Video. This adds a screen with a placeholder video.
  3. Click Replace video at the top of the screen.
  4. In the pop-up, paste your YouTube link into the URL field.

Frequently asked questions

No. The standard YouTube URL is all you need.

Where does the video play?

Inline, within the course, so learners stay where they are.

What about captions?

A YouTube video carries whatever captions are set on YouTube itself. You don't upload a caption file for it in Coassemble. That's only for video you upload to Coassemble directly.

Can I add a custom thumbnail to a linked YouTube video?

No. Custom thumbnails are only available for videos uploaded to Coassemble, not for linked videos.
